Waking up in Zermatt, going to bed in Amsterdam

The last day of our Interrail trip! Anders booked himself on a very early train, so when I woke up, he was already on his way home to Sweden. Stepping out on the balcony of our nice hotel (Corona), I had a glorious view of Matterhorn, the top being gilded by the first rays of the sun.
I was heading home too, via a number of train changes in Switzerland, then a long sprint from Bern to Köln and finally to Amsterdam.

It’s been a magnificent trip. But it’s nice to be home again.

St Moritz, Glacier Express and Zermatt

Today we had an early start, heading to St Moritz to look around a bit before boarding the famous Glacier Express to Zermatt. St Moritz looked OK, but I don’t think it is my kind of place. Although the possibilities for paragliding looked OK.

The Glacier Express winds it’s way through the Swiss Alps via mountain passes, serpentine tunnels and brave bridges. You can go most of the way with normal trains, but onboard the Glacier Express, you travel in style. Panorama windows all the way up in the ceiling provide great views, while you dine and wine. It’s all very civilised.

Eight hours of this, and it was a bless to stretch our legs in Zermatt, where the impressing mountain of Matterhorn (a. k. a. the Toblerone mountain) looms in the background. We had a sobering look at the cemetery, where stone after stone commemorated fallen climbers, then had a beer or two at a local bar.
